5 Creature Comfort Essentials for a PNW Sailing Weekend

Comfort-wise, sailing in the PNW can be quite different than sailing in other locations. However, even though it is not always sunny and warm, it is always beautiful and if you are prepared, comfortable. There are a few things that I always pack for weekend sailing trips in the PNW, no matter the season.

Sun Protection

The PNW is notoriously cloudy but that doesn’t mean skipping the sun protection gear. Spending the day (or weekend) sailing probably means you are outside enjoying the sea air. Even if there is cloud cover, you are likely getting some sun and it is likely reflecting off the water. In the summer, the days are long in the PNW and often quite sunny, so don’t forget the sunscreen, sun shirt, hats, and sunglasses!

Rain Jacket

If you have seen Sleepless in Seattle, then you know that we get a lot of rain in the PNW. (Though if you have seen Sleepless, you have been misled as to how we get all that rain.) This one probably seems like a no-brainer but it can be surprisingly sunny in the summer. Regardless, the rain (or mist or fog) can show up overnight. Even if it doesn’t rain, a rain jacket can be a good barrier layer for chilly mountain breezes.

Extra Clothes

This one may seem obvious for an overnight trip but one thing I have noticed (about myself anyway) is that no matter how carefully I plan my outfits and pack, I usually end up wearing one go-to outfit for an entire boat trip (depending on the length of the trip). With that in mind, I will sometimes pack a little bit lighter or pack things that may be untested (like a new romper). However, you never know when you might fall out of your kayak. Ask me how I know.

Bandana

I have been surprised at how useful carrying a bandana can be. I keep one in my boat-out bag. It can be used for so many things: glasses cleaner, napkin, mask for inevitable smoky summer days, boat hair coverup, cute accessory to jazz up that go-to outfit, etc. They are small and they dry quickly.

Warm Socks

Finally, I always pack warm wool socks, no matter the season. In the summer I prefer to go barefoot on the boat but even in the warmest parts of the summer, the nights can get chilly in the PNW, especially if you are exploring the fjords. The best advice I got was to always pack cozy socks. Warm socks have helped me sleep on unexpectedly cold nights and kept me cozy while playing late night card games in the cabin.

These are just a few of the creature comfort things I always pack for a weekend sailing trip in the PNW. What are some of yours?

Happy Sailing!
